    Aloys Schmitt (1813-1870)

    Aloys Schmitt was a pianist and a prominent teacher. He was born in Erlenbach, Bavaria on August 26, 1788 and died in Frankfurt on July 25, 1866.
    Son and pupil of a cantor, at the age of 14 he was already a very good performer, while at the age of 20 he studied composition in Offenbach.
    He settled in Frankfurt in 1816, where he lived until his death having worked for some years in Berlin and Hanover as an organist of the Duke of Cambridge, where his son, Georg Aloys Schmitt, equally good musician, was born.
    His educational works for piano include a Method, opus 114, the Studies, opus 16, 55 and 62 (Rhapsodies), as well as the opus 67 and 115, the Rondos, opus 3, the Sonatinas opus 10 and 11. He also wrote four Concertos for piano, a Concertino for piano and orchestra, Rondos, Variations, etc. for piano and orchestra, quartets and trios for piano, solo pieces, three operas, two oratorios, liturgies and more.
